Character Interview: Ellie Wagner from Ellie’s Escape

By Linda Shenton Matchett

Thanks for sitting down with me, Ellie. You’ve had quite a bit of excitement over the last few months, and I’d love to hear about it. Excitement is an understatement. I was in a bank in Baltimore when it was robbed, and the mask on one of the thieves came off which meant I could identify him. He threatened to kill me if I told anyone about him, so I had to leave the city. Fast! Milly Crenshaw of the Westward Home and Hearts Matrimonial Agency was also in the bank, and she helped me get away. I moved to Gunnison, Colorado to be a mail-order bride.

From Maryland to Colorado must have been a huge change. Tell us about that. At nearly 8,000 feet above sea level in the mountains, Gunnison is very different from anything I’ve ever known. The winters are very long in Colorado, and very cold. {shivers}  I miss Baltimore, the lovely spring weather, the conveniences within walking distance, and the culture. Any night of the week, one can attend a concert, lecture, or some other delight. But I’ve already made wonderful friends and there is more to do here than I originally thought, so I don’t get homesick as often.

What is your family like? It’s just Mother, Father, and me. We’re very close, so it’s been difficult for them to have me so far away. I have lots of fond memories picnicking in the park and going to public gardens in and around the city. We’re all musical, Mother being able to play the piano, and Father and I able to sing. I often used singing as a teaching tool when I was a teacher. Children response well to music.

You went to Gunnison to marry a banker. Is that your definition of success? If not, how would you define success? I’m probably different than most people in that financial success is not important to me. I’m glad Julian likes his job, and he’s very good at it, but if he lost everything tomorrow, I would not be upset. I’m a believer, and as such I determine my success, as you call it, by how well I’m following what God would have me do. Am I glorifying him in my daily living? Am I an example of His saving grace? That sort of thing.

How would you describe yourself? {giggles} The exact opposite of Julian, and that can be a point of contention between us. Part of what makes him good at his job is that he is methodical. Analytical. Deliberate and careful. I’m spontaneous and like to see what each day will bring. I do very little planning, and I think it makes him a little crazy. {smiles}

Thanks for taking time to speak with us! I hope everything works out for you.
