 Getting to know Rachel:

-What fun or unique things can you tell us about yourself?   When I started writing this book, my oldest son was four, and by the time I finished it, my youngest son was four. The same thing happened during my first book, when they were age one! It worked out great for small-character continuity.

Also, many details of the Fall Fest that the main characters, Kaleigh and Jackson, go to are true to my home in Florida. Floridians love to get out and enjoy the autumn season like everyone else! We just wear fewer layers while doing it.

-Please describe yourself with three words.  I am organized, which comes in handy when writing! I am a deep thinker, which can get me into trouble if I worry too much. However, it's a great help when I need to focus, or when I pick out a detail that others might not notice. I would say I'm nurturing because I feel it’s important that those around me feel comfortable, loved, and happy, as much as is in my power.

-What do you enjoy doing for relaxation?  I like planning activities for my children and I to enjoy together. It's relaxing to take a walk or sit outside in a beautiful place. Unfortunately for my bank account, I enjoy going shopping with friends! At home, I will do my nails and put on a face mask from time to time. Finally, the classic settling down with a book and burning a lovely scented candle usually does the trick!

Kaleigh ran her fingers through her auburn hair, content to sacrifice a put-together ponytail for an ounce more patience.

“Mom,” she said levelly, “You know I can’t call out of any more shifts.”

Lana picked at her hot pink talons, not looking her daughter in the eye. “What I know is you told me I wouldn’t turn into Aaron’s full-time babysitter.”

Kaleigh released a shaky exhale. “It won’t always be like this. I’m so close to saving enough money.”

Lana rolled her eyes. “This again. How will you pass college classes when you can’t even handle a retail job?”

Kaleigh considered citing the numbers she’d crunched—how much more her annual income would be after investing in her education. But she knew it was pointless. And a nagging, heart-sickening part of her felt that Lana had made a good point.

It was a struggle to hold down her job and not totally ignore Aaron. She did her best, but still came home to a boy who grew taller and smarter each day she was away. Soon you’ll have flexible work hours and more time off, Kaleigh chanted to herself.

She kept her voice calm. “Can you please help me out Saturday, so I don’t have to call out?”

“I’m sorry, but I’m already watching him tomorrow. I can’t cancel on the girls again, or they’ll stop asking me to go out.”

Like Kaleigh didn’t know how that felt. How it hurt when every friend she thought had cared about her couldn’t bother to keep calling once things got hard.

They’d thought it was cool enough to be tight with the pregnant girl, to ask questions about her appointments and symptoms in algebra class. But when the baby had arrived, after the cute hospital pics had been taken and the long nights set in, it wasn’t as fun to be Kaleigh’s friend.

Kaleigh wished Lana could brush it off the way that she did, but that would never happen. The admiration of others made Lana’s world go round. Well, Aaron was Kaleigh’s world. She would be there for him somehow.
