Loosing the Chains

Diana Leagh Matthews • Nov 30, 2023

Join me today as I welcome author and blogger Diana Leagh Matthews as she shares about the chains that bind us.

Aloof. Detached. Distant.

My friend fit all of these adjectives. During the time we knew one another he told me who he was. How he had hurt and betrayed others. I never thought it would happen to me. Until it did.

Longing to find a way to heal my broken heart, I turned to writing, which has allowed me to cure more than one betrayal.

My mind churned. As I considered the individual who hurt me a story developed. A few chapters in, I recognized the similarity to Ebenezer Scrooge, the well-known miser in “A Christmas Carol.”

In that moment the heart of the story for “Carol of the Rooms” took root and I understood who Terri Neely was, why she was so angry, and how her story would progress.

While writing, I realized how much I could be like Terri and Scrooge at times. Allowing myself to shut down after abusive relationships and deception. I didn’t want to remain withdrawn and untrusting, but change didn’t happen overnight.

The process has taken years to release the pain and anger that weighed me down. It’s not been easy but through prayer, journaling, Bible study, and talking with trusted friends I’ve begun to heal and release the invisible chains I carried.

Just as Scrooge, I’ve had the opportunity to change my heart and my ways before it’s too late.

Scripture tells us, "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:31-32, ESV)

Are there areas of your heart that need healing?

How did you get started writing?

My journey is long and winding. After an argument with a family member, I calmed down a story formed in my mind. I wrote the summary and within a year, had a completed manuscript. Then life and an abusive relationship derailed my journey for years. As I healed, I began writing again and learning about the craft and industry.

What can your readers expect from you next?

My novel “Forever Changed” will release in the spring of 2024. Danielle Davis ran from home to pursue her dreams years ago following a tragedy. Another tragedy pulls her back, leaving her guardian to her sister’s seven children and two elderly family members. Can she find a way to open her heart to those who need her most? Will she be able to find a balance between her passion and family?
