My Made-Up Boyfriend -- with Book Spotlight

Betty J. Slade • Apr 05, 2023

Join me today as I welcome author Betty J. Slade. She's sharing about a secret boyfriend...

I love to write about strong country families. Unpretentious, hard workers, they live honest lives, and raise good children with strong work values. They help their neighbors and have deep moral convictions. They respect their family and care for their animals.

When grandson, Luke Barrett, 26, rescues a Curly Sulphur mustang from Disappointment Valley, the story begins. The mustang becomes one of the characters and is used as a metaphor for Bree Steele, the 22 years old girl who arrives at the ranch. She was six years old when her mother left her on the streets of San Francisco. Feral and an outcast from society, she is looking for her family.

Bree witnessed a murder. She runs from the syndicate and ends up on the Crawford River Ranch. Love, suspense, and drama fills the pages of this contemporary story, Taming Wild Hearts, Book One in the Disappointment Valley Series.

A perfect idea for a great story. I put my fingers to the keys and wrote a 71,000-word fiction based on actual facts. I completed the manuscript. The story went through many edits and fact checks in order to produce a clean script. I signed with Elk Lake Publishing, Inc. I started the process of producing and marketing my story.

I told the world for the past four years about the book I wrote and would soon be released into the market. I talked about it to the point that I don’t think anyone believed there was an actual book. It was all in my head.

It’s like going to work every day and talking about a made-up boyfriend. No one has seen him, and doesn’t believe he is real. His name is Luke, a good-looking Colorado cowboy. He lives on the Upper Blanco with his family on the Crawford River Ranch. Soon he will be seen on the pages of this novel. It has been promised to be released before summer.

Excerpts from Luke and Bree’s first meeting

“You don’t need a ride?”

“No.”

“You sure?”

She nodded.

He tipped the brim of his hat. “Ma’am.”

You’re flirting. Bree watched him scoot into the truck. You’re rad and know you are. I bet the girls are all giddy over you.

About Taming Wild Hearts:

Nova Bree Steele is on the run after witnessing a murder in San Francisco. She hitchhikes to a ranch in the heart of the Rocky Mountains in search of Joe Crawford, a good man she heard could help her.

Modern-day cowboy, Luke Barrett rescues a rare Curly Sulphur Mustang from poachers in Disappointment Valley, Colorado. He and Bree join the efforts of a doctor working to save the Curly Sulphur Mustang breed from extinction. Relationships are forged with strength and courage to find their purpose.

Their lives, and the life of a rare mustang collide in the crosshairs of greedy men and the San Francisco Syndicate. They must find common ground and learn to work together, or they won’t survive the pursuits of evil men.

A Peek Inside Taming Wild Hearts

Ouch! Quilled by a porcupine. Luke’s guard went up. She’s dangerous.

Luke’s truck tires ground against the rocks before he veered the vehicle and trailer onto the highway.

The girl with the green eyes captured Luke’s thoughts and gnawed on him as he drove west toward Durango. What’s she doing in this drive-through town and why do I care?
