Researching Historical Fiction

Victoria Price • Nov 07, 2022

Today I welcome back author Victoria Price as she shares about researching historical fiction.

Writing a period-based novel such as the Hoyden and the Rake requires researching history. Mine is set during the Regency era in England when King George is believed to be mad, and the crown prince becomes the regent. While fighting in the Napoleonic wars Fiona’s brother Ted, is believed to be dead leaving Fiona to fend for herself which is the event that kick-starts the storyline.

My research revealed many themes prevalent during that time. Such as arranged marriages, the archaic rules of the Haute ton, the gentleman’s code of honor, and the double standards that dictated that women were required to be chaste and follow propriety, while men could possess all manner of vices and still be desirable.  Britain also followed the patriarchal system where the male inherits, and the husband owns everything that is given to the wife as dowry. Another theme that fascinated me was the emphasis on preserving one’s reputation above all else.

I was inspired to write my main character Fiona as a young debutante rebelling against all these rules. She is bold, strong-willed, and impulsive. Fiona is left at the mercy of her sly relative Harry when her brother Ted is presumed dead.  He wants to marry her and inherit her brother’s title and fortune. Determined not to be forced into a disagreeable marriage, she flees home only for a carriage accident to deposit her at the home of a rake.  Phillip rumored to have caused his own wife’s demise, is shunned by the ton and is Ted’s declared foe.  Despite the risk to her reputation, she is unable to depart without her escort. The untenable situation forces them together against their will, leading to a love that neither wants to acknowledge because they know it’s doomed. The characters try to navigate to their own beliefs and the rules of fine society leading to conflict.

Many little details, add sparkle to the setting in historical fiction; A ball where the ladies and gentlemen flirt and charm trying to make favorable alliances.  The fashions of the time were gowns of silk, satin, and lace; ostentatious jewelry; flirtatious fans, and impractical reticules.  Duels were fought with Manton’s. The loyal staff: valet, abigail, housekeeper, and butler.  It was a delight to weave these elements into the plot, especially the style of speech used by various members of the social order and every one of these elements is essential to the plot of my story.

There are many online resources for writing in this genre, however, as a self-published author, I needed to fact-check the details for myself. I watched adaptations of historical books. I read and reread works of authors who inspired me; Austen, Holt, Cartland, Veryan, Bronte, and Heyer among others.   Reading newer historical fiction helped me about what appealed to present-day readers. I visited England and observed the paintings and castles to add authenticity to my writing and my British editor was a lifesaver for fact-checking my manuscript.

Ultimately the fun plot, the lovable characters, the authentic setting, and the details that transport the reader back in time, are what made this a book I enjoyed writing.
