Writing a Series

Lisa Pelissier • Sep 27, 2023

Today I welcome author Lisa Pelissier as she shares about writing a series and her recent release.

I always wanted to write analogy fiction like the Chronicles of Narnia, but every time I tried, it sounded cheesy, lame, obvious, and obnoxious. So I decided I would just write. Whatever flowed out of me was what my books were going to be. If they were Christian—good. If they weren’t… well, that would be something worth knowing about my heart. (Matthew 12:34b says, “For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.”) I’m glad to report that although what came out of me wasn’t anything as brilliant as C.S. Lewis’ analogies, it is rife with themes of atonement, repentance, sacrifice, and love. I like to think that the concepts of Christianity might resonate more clearly for someone hearing the gospel for the first time if they’ve read my books. And that’s what’s important.

Flushed, releasing October 2, is the fourth in the Pack of Lies: Stories of the Dragon Keepers series. The Kindle/e-book version is available for pre-order now.

The first book, Iced, saw four boys, Weed, his little brother, Souk, and their twin cousins, Emmitt and Bojack, on a cruise to Antarctica with their wacky Aunt Tildy. They discover that she is a member of a secret organization called the Dragon Keepers. The cruise is not just a vacation—she is on a mission to look into dragon sightings in the Antarctic waters. Danger ensues when a rival organization, the IPS, eager to contact the dragons first, kidnaps Aunt Tildy and the boys and dumps them in the middle of the icy continent.

Aunt Tildy left Antarctica with the boys, but she brought someone else along with her, breaking the ordinances of the Dragon Keepers. In book 2, Axed, it’s up to the boys to testify on Aunt Tildy’s behalf to show the ancient organization that their aunt is not deserving of death.

Book 3, Hitched, sees the four boys visiting China again for Aunt Tildy’s wedding. Everything would have gone as planned—without a hitch—except for the interference of the evil workers of the IPS. Can Weed and the boys figure out a way to save the day?

Flushed begins when Souk and Joey, Zhu’s niece, dive into a vortex deep beneath the sea in order to find the secret dwelling place of dragons. Will they arrive at the Submeridian Sea? Will they be able to get back? And in the meantime, Weed, the cousins, and the Dragon Keepers are hard at work combatting the evil dwarf Lucy and the beast of the deep who has surfaced with an intent to destroy the world. Only together will they be able to find the right formula to vanquish the evil ones.

This series is written for middle grade (ages 8-14) but I hope it has broader appeal. I’m planning a six-book series, followed by a “next generation” series later.

Note: The e-book version of book 1, Iced, will be available for free from October 2 to October 6 in conjunction with the release of Flushed.
