Christmas Novella Spotlight -- Christmas Past, Christmas Present

Donna Schlachter • Dec 27, 2022

Here's another Christmas novella spotlight about a story from the past, and how it healed a family in the present.

I originally wrote the historical part of this story for an anthology, and then learned I hadn't read the rules very well. The story was supposed to be true. So I wrote another for the anthology, which was also accepted.

I was left with this wonderful story of my grandfather. While so far as I know nothing about the events of the story are true, the man portraying my mother's father is true to form. Right down to smoking a pipe, and being kind to rambunctious grandchildren.

No, this story didn't happen to him, or to anybody I know. But it could have.

Which is what made it so perfect to be meshed together with another family facing heartbreak and separation.

Christmas is a tough time of year for all of us who recall functional childhoods and perfect children and menus that are top notch and in-laws who are precious--what? Nobody you know. I get it. Looking back, my childhood was what it was. Nothing perfect. But we made the best of what we had.

Add into the mix parents or spouses no longer around, estrangements between siblings, poverty, job loss, health uncertainties--sometimes peace on earth is tough to find.

So we find it where we can--by trying to bring together the people we love. By remembering those who are gone. By valuing sacrifice, and patriotism, and memories of better times past.
