Christmas Novella Spotlight -- The Mystery of Christmas Inn, Colorado

Donna Schlachter • Dec 27, 2022

In keeping with the Christmas season, here's another novella I wrote that includes Christmas, a mature couple, and a mystery.

I first got the idea for this story while doing research in Colorado Springs. There I learned about a luxurious old hotel called The Antlers that was burned by fire, restored, and then torn down to make room for the new hotel.

I love old things. Buildings, Furniture. Cars. People. Clothing. Stories. Jokes. Even pease pudding (you know the ditty, pease pudding in the pot, nine days old...)

So to learn that a perfectly functioning old building was demolished to make room for a trendy new one--well, that raised my blood pressure a few bits.

And so the story came to me. An older man and a woman, unconnected at this point, looking for answers in their latter years, comes to the hotel at Christmas, only to learn that it is slated for demolition in the new year. They independently and then together try to save the old place. In doing so, they discover a mystery, put their own lives in danger, figure out their paths forward, and --well, suffice it to say, just because there's snow on the roof doesn't mean there isn't a fire in the hearth.
