The Cow Spoke and Jesus Woke

Faith Richardson • Dec 12, 2023

Help me welcome author Faith Richardson as she shares about her latest Christmas story.

It’s a funny thing, when I was young, writing came in the form of journaling and poetry. I could rhyme just about anything. As I grew, my ability to write other things blossomed. It was an escape from reality into whatever world I created.

I put my writing aside for decades as I raised my family. I pulled it out from time to time for special occasions, like poetry on a birthday card or writing company handbooks and procedure manuals.

When I retired in 2020, I pulled out all my old writings. I had forgotten about most of them. So, rereading them brought a swell of pride and excitement back into my life that I thought I’d lost forever.

I started writing again. Now, I feel like a water spigot broken off at the wall. The writing is pouring out of me, and I love it. This is where I am meant to be.

I joined the Wolf Creek Christian Writers Network (WCCWN) in 2022. They are a group of Christian writers from all walks of life who bring a plethora of writing experiences to the group. It is a pleasure being surrounded by like-minded individuals who share the same passion and talents as me. I glean everything I can from them.

Betty Slade, a member of the WCCWN, speaks wisdom into the group with a weekly challenge. Her words speak straight into my soul. She declared that each of us has the Living Word in us. If He gives us a word and we don’t share it, then we are being stingy with God’s word. So, I make it a point to write down every message received from God, and either speak it, post it, or publish it in whatever way is possible. I don’t always know who the word is for, but I make sure it’s out there for all to read or hear.

On December 12, 2022, I was with the Centerpoint Church worship team for which I am the ASL interpreter. We were rehearsing for Sunday’s worship when the song, “Away in a Manger” came up on the screen. I was unfamiliar with the word “lowing” when it came to cattle, so I asked the team the meaning of the word. I thought it meant that the cattle were lying down around the manger. When they informed me that it meant the cattle were making soft noises, I declared, “Wait. So, you’re saying the cow spoke and Jesus woke?” We all laughed at my rhyme, but I knew it would make a great story. The Cow Spoke and Jesus Woke had a first draft that afternoon.

With encouragement from Betty and other members of the WCCWN, the book is published.

God’s Word is never returned void. We don’t always get to know who the word is for, but if we are faithful to be obedient in His calling, He is faithful to see us through the task to which He called us.
